Want to experience the annual Tiji Festival celebrated in Lo-Manthang from 24th May to 26th May 2025, but cannot manage the time? Or simply prefer not to trek all the way to Lo-Manthang? Himalaya Trekking Team has the perfect alternative for you!
Our exclusive 2025 Upper Mustang Tiji Festival 4WD Jeep Tour takes you deep into Upper Mustang in the comfort of a private 4x4 jeep, stopping along the way to explore all the major sights and absorb the truly unique atmosphere of this remote enclave of Tibetan culture.
Once only accessible by foot, after several days of walking along the Kali Gandaki riverbed, the region is now connected to the rest of Nepal by road, making a round trip possible.
We follow that road through vast barren landscapes dotted with medieval villages seemingly untouched for centuries, past ruined forts perched on red and ochre cliffs and impressive monasteries rich in ancient Buddhist art, and reach Lo-Manthang just in time for the Tiji Festival.
An experience like no other, the Tiji Festival is an extraordinary spectacle of good triumphing over evil. For three days, monks wearing masks and colorful costumes swirl to the rhythm of traditional drums, horns, and Buddhist chanting, re-enacting the battle of Dorje Shunu against his demon father to save the people of Mustang from destruction.
Initially a religious ceremony, Tiji has evolved over time to become a symbol of hope, strength, and peace. It is believed that simply attending it will bring merit to its observers.
Join us on this outstanding journey into one of the last Tibetan cultures existing today. Booking is now open!

Accompanied by your guide, you visit four of them: the famous Swayambhunath, Boudhanath and Pashupatinath temples, and Durbar Square in Patan.
Overnight at hotel.
Early in the morning, we take a tourist bus to Pokhara [884m], a 200-kilometre journey along a very scenic route. If you prefer, you can fly instead. Your guide will transfer you to your Lakeside hotel. You will then have the rest of the day to relax and explore Nepal’s second largest town, wandering along the shores of Phewa Lake and absorbing magnificent views of the entire Annapurna range, Manaslu [8156m], Machhapuchhare [6993m] and Dhaulagiri [8167m].
Flight time: 20 minutes / Driving: approximately 7-8 hours.

After an early breakfast, we take a 25-minute scenic flight to Jomsom [2720m], Mustang's administrative headquarters. In Jomsom, we stop for a short while to let you sort your gear. We then head towards the small settlement of Ekle Bhatti [2740m] and drive up to Kagbeni [2800m]. At the northern end of the village, a police checkpost marks the beginning of the restricted area. We have our special permits stamped and our journey into the Kingdom of Mustang begins. Following the ancient, windswept salt-trade route along the Kali Gandaki River, we pass Chhuksang [3050m], with spectacular views of red organ-pipe eroded cliffs and inaccessible caves, and eventually reach Chele [3100m], where we spend the night.

After breakfast, we resume our drive. Today’s route goes through Samar [3620m] and Syangboche [3850m]. Back in the jeep, cross yet another mountain pass, the Chogo La [4230m], the highest point of our trip, to begin our final descent to the ancient walled city of Lo-Manthang [3840m], which we reach two hours later. After breakfast, we take a jeep excursion to the nearby Chhosar Valley whose wonders includethe Jhong cave complex, an amazing multistorey structure of interconnected dwellings reached by ladders and thought to be 2500 years old, and Nyphu Gompa [3760m], carved into the side of a soaring cliff near the village of Garphu [3897m]. We then make our way back to Lo-Manthang to watch the masked monks of Chhoede Gompa perform ritual dances at the Tiji Festival.

Today we have more time to explore Lo-Manthang, a fascinating town which offers unique insights into the lifestyle and beliefs of Tibetan people. Founded in 1440 by the first King of Lo, Amedpal (1388-1447), it is surrounded by a 6-metre-high and 725-metre-long wall with massive square towers. Within these are some of Nepal’s finest and largest Tibetan Buddhist gompas, whose interiors are filled with some of the finest Buddhist wall paintings in Nepal and Tibet. We visit Thubchen Lakhang, Jampa Lhakhang, Chhoede Gompa and Choprang Gompa, as well as the royal palace. Then we watch the final celebrations of the Tiji Festival outside the King’s palace and then outside the city walls, where demons will be banished amidst loud cries and the firing of muskets.
